How to Lower Cortisol using EFT Tapping

If you have high cortisol, then it is your body’s way of saying you’re stuck in stress mode. As we know cortisol is known as a stress hormone, and there are studies are proving the relation between stess and cortisol.

In my experience, it usually happens when something overwhelming isn’t fully processed. Instead of resolving the experience, the mind stores it, and the nervous system keeps reacting to it.

This could come from daily stress, but more often, I’ve noticed it’s tied to a specific emotional event or memory.

Signs of high cortisol

There are a few symptoms of high cortisol that I’ve come across, and some of them are —

  • Constant overthinking or feeling “on edge”
  • Trouble sleeping or feeling tired but wired
  • Anxiety, irritability, or mood swings
  • Low energy and burnout
  • Difficulty relaxing, even when things are calm

What I find interesting is that many of these symptoms have nothing to do with what’s happening right now. That’s why stress can feel so constant, even when nothing is actually “wrong” in the present.

How I Use EFT Tapping to Lower Cortisol

In my sessions, I focus on finding the root of that stress, the exact memory or incident that’s still active in the nervous system (and sometimes, it can be more than one!).

Once we identify it, we use EFT tapping on that specific emotional trigger. As we tap, the body starts to calm down. The nervous system shifts out of stress mode, and that’s when cortisol naturally begins to lower.

Most people feel noticeably lighter and more relaxed after just one session. Results can vary depending on how deep the stress is, but there’s almost always a clear shift.

What I’ve also noticed is that in many cases, these triggers go all the way back to childhood. Those early experiences quietly shape how we respond to stress for years. But once we process and release them, the change can feel surprisingly immediate.

When EFT tapping is used this way, not just for surface relief but for resolving the actual cause, it becomes a powerful way to lower cortisol and feel genuinely at ease.

What Research Says

There is growing research supporting this approach.

A well-known study by Dawson Church (2012) found that a single EFT session significantly reduced cortisol levels by up to 24% compared to other interventions.

Other clinical studies and reviews have shown that EFT can help reduce anxiety, stress, and emotional distress by calming the nervous system and helping the brain process unresolved experiences.

Research in psychology also supports the idea that unprocessed emotional memories, especially from childhood, can keep the body in a prolonged stress response.

While results can vary, the evidence aligns with what I see in practice: when the root emotional trigger is addressed, the body naturally shifts out of stress mode.
